I just hope to post happy, cheerful and funny stuff. It's just a personal blog that's meant to be fun & not too serious!
Ugh. I feel so old.
I’m actually old enough to have an ex boyfriend who has been married, had 2 children and is now getting a divorce. I’m 26 on Tuesday. My Facebook news feed is full of pics of my old classmates’s school age children playing in the snow. When someone says “10 years ago” I have to remind myself they mean 2003 (the year I finished my GCSEs) not the 90’s. My life is still good though :-)
Rupy Kaur: Why she kicks ass
- She is a Sikh disability activist and an officer for NUS Disabled Students’ Campaign; which is the largest single organisation in the UK run by disabled students, for disabled students.
- At the University of Manchester, she was founder and chairwoman of the ABLED society, which was set up to enhance disabled students’ experiences at university.
- She was also elected as the Open Place Representative on the Disabled Students’ Committee for the National Union of Students. Her role involves raising disability issues, including accessible transport.
- Rupy is also a member of SKILL, the National Bureau of Students with Disabilities. She was appointed member of the Disabled Persons’ Transport Advisory Committee in July.
- In 2009, she completed a tandem skydive at Grange over Sands to raise funds for the anti racism organisation Searchlightand its Hope Not Hate campaign.
Ruby Wax on mental illness, [x].
motherfucking SLAM.
and just in case you aren’t sad enough, here are a couple of brain scans showing differences between the brains of two children of equivalent ages.
The experience of being abused and deprived of stimulation permanently and physicially alters the developing brain of a child in significant measurable ways that we do not have the science yet to repair after the damage is discovered.
It sounds very odd, but, in fact, when you are an infant and your brain is developing, the love that the people around you give, the touch, the eye contact, the tone of voice, the things, the physical manifestations of our love literally provide stimulation to the developing brain, and the neurons in the brain have more sprouts. They make certain areas connect more effectively. They make certain areas grow. They literally make the brain become functional.
Love literally grows the brain.[x]The kid whose head is wired by neglect or abuse is going to have a difficult life in a world his brain was not built to interact with. Maybe he’ll get in trouble with the law, have emotional problems and act out or become abusive to his loved ones, or maybe he’ll just spin his wheels and feel empty and wonder why (as many people will no doubt have asked him outright over his years) he can’t just try harder to get over it.
Massive amounts of therapy will help later, but that’s assuming he isn’t too ashamed to get it or turned away thanks to our bullshit for-profit healthcare system.
Mind over matter is bullshit if the matter is your mind.

GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD.
This annoys me so much. The ketogenic diet is a high fat, moderate protein and very low carb diet. By restricting carbs your body is forced to produce ketones and use fat for energy instead.
The ketogenic diet (KD) does have a use in medicine - to treat drug resistant epilepsy. For many children who have been on 2 types of anti epileptic medication but still having seizures every day the KD has cut their seizure frequency in half, in some cases the figure is by 90%.
The KD is not without side effects though, these can include gastro-intestinal disturbances, over production of ketones, fatigue, vomitting and in the long term can cause cardio vascular problems. People on the KD for epilepsy are doing this under close medical supervision. Most people don’t stay on KD for more than 2 years and it’s definitely not a sustainable diet for life.
This is why people promoting KD on fitspo forums annoys me. It’s not a diet designed for weight loss, and should definitely not be done without medical supervision. No doctor would recommend the KD for weight loss.
Of course it’s your choice if you choose to go on KD but please let your GP/family doctor know first.
whoa whoa, lady. you should do your research before you start running your mouth.
first off, let’s see some studies on long term keto causing cardiovascular problems. this is quite a bold statement, considering all i’ve ever encountered is keto improving triglyceride levels responsible for heart disease.
i can tell you from personal experience that keto solved ALL of my gastro-intestinal problems. all. of. them. this is generally what i have encountered in the keto community. perhaps, some people may have this reaction during the adaptation phase, which can last anywhere from a few days to a month. mine was a month.
over production of ketones - what does this even mean? you may be thinking of ketoacidosis, an uncontrolled production of ketones which happens in diabetics. completely different from controlled dietary ketosis.
fatigue happens on low carb due to lack of electrolytes. since your body can’t retain water as it does with carbs, electrolytes need to be replenished more often and in greater quantities. drinking broth is often recommended to solve the issue of fatigue and brain fog. also, potassium and magnesium.
i have never heard of anyone vomiting on keto. i’ve heard about nausea during fat fasts, but that’s 90% of calories coming from fat - quite a bit different.
where are you getting the info that most people don’t stay on keto for more than two years? why exactly isn’t it sustainable for life?
you, lady, need to do your goddamn motherfucking research. here are some helpful resources for you: keto subreddit where you will see countless testimonies of how helpful keto has been to many many people, not only in weight loss, but energy levels, overall health and quality of life. you can also check out this guy’s post here . he has been on keto for over 10 years - here are pictures of his progress on keto. another good site is ketogenic diet resource. you can review tons of peer reviewed studies, and learn about what other ailments keto has shown to help with, other than epilepsy (information that you obviously got from reading the first sentence in the keto wiki entry).
what diet do you believe was DESIGNED for weight loss? because low fat sure wasn’t. low fat was designed for profit, and boy oh boy are people profiting from it. low fat products being bought all over the place, doctors and pharmacists making tons of bucks on people continuously developing the good ol’ that there diabetus. because guess what, fat is replaced by sugar and chemicals. fat that wasn’t bad for anyone in the first place.
i fucking hate when people start running their mouths about shit they know nothing about. stfu before you do your due diligence by researching the subject you so strongly feel about.
“do your research”
You speak from a subjective point of view. Yes people in the keto community may respond well to the diet but I’m referring to randomised trials and systematic reviews. I have done academic assignments and presentations on this study. So excuse me if I tend to go by medical papers as opposed to your experience of the keto community.
Like I said your choice what you do with your body but it’s not a recommended approach to weight loss.
Oh and FYI your sub reddit forum & your ketogenic resource web page (which I have read through and was appalled by the amount of pseudo scientific nonsense) do not count as academic or medical research.
Oh and it looks like low glycemic index or low glycemic load diets are highly recommended alongside having a diet that is generally low in fat.
the subreddit is for the purposes of numerous experiences, not academic research.
the web page, if you even bothered to look, refers and provides LINKS TO legitimate research.
If you are a university student you should be able to access these studies through academic journals. If they were just on a web page I’d link you but there’s good stuff in the lancet neurology journal. Also look up the Cochrane collaboration.
A good way to tell if research is legitimate it should be peer reviewed, I also use a hierarchy of evidence (you could find one by google searching)
